Everyone knows the three “R”s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—but most people tend to focus on the last one. Recycling is one of the most important actions we can take to live a greener life, but it’s the second “R” that can actually lower your carbon footprint and be the most fun!  Reusing items isn’t just limited to Tupperware and cloth napkins, but your furniture and home décor too. Antiques and vintage items are the best way to add flair and style to any room of the house while being economically and environmentally responsible. Buying antiques ensures two things: a lower carbon footprint and added value to your space.

Buying antiques is the greenest way to shop for furniture and home décor.  Making new furniture, particularly mass-produced furniture that comes from a specific Swedish company that shall not be named, is harsh on the environment. Not only do forests have to be leveled to produce the raw material for the furniture, but metric tons of poisonous gasses are emitted transporting it across the world. Think about it: heavy machinery is needed to tear down trees, big trucks are needed to transport the logs, more heavy machinery is needed to transform logs into lumber, more big trucks are needed to transport the lumber to the factory, and on and on until it finally arrives at your house. Then after a couple years, the furniture breaks like it was designed to do so you have buy more! Antiques, however, were made over century ago! The only new carbon that’s emitted is transporting it from our store to your home, and with it being already over a century old, you the know piece of furniture is going to last for generations. Antiquing, then, is the only way to reduce your carbon footprint when remodeling your home short of making all of the furniture yourself….and who has the time for that? 

Also, not only will you reduce your carbon footprint and live a greener lifestyle by antiquing, but you will gain style, uniqueness, and history in your living space. Reusing high-quality furniture adds style and uniqueness, because (and at risk of sounding cliché) they just don’t make them like they used to. The flair, the accents, the genuine craftsmanship of antique furniture and home décor adds that little bit extra you don’t see in modern pieces—a little lagniappe that’s desperately needed in our lives. Your space is also enhanced with history when you shop antiques. That 150-year-old dresser you bought was loved by families past just as you love it in your bedroom now. By reusing furniture, you aren’t being cheap or cutting corners, you’re bringing a valued history into your home and adding your own story to it. Your story is one of being environmentally conscious, having an eye for style, and being supportive of local shops.

So how did we get from the three “R”s to talking about love and history? Well, reusing furniture is finest way to go green and add value when redecorating your home. Circa 1857 is looking to hire a part-time worker with a flexible schedule. We’re looking for someone who is eager to help customers find whatever home decor they may be looking for. We want a team player; someone who will show up to work on time, and be excited to share thoughts and ideas in an effort to make Circa even better! Circa 1857 is a large store and thus has a lot of needs. We want a team member that takes initiative to tackle projects and daily routines without necessarily always being asked. New Store Hours

We’re so happy to be back in action! So happy in fact, we’ve extended our hours…

We’re now open from 10AM until 6PM Tuesday through Friday and 10AM until 5PM on the weekends.

Yes, we’re closed on Mondays which is different, but we feel it’s important to have a day to clean, spruce up and take care of our store, so that the rest of the days you can enjoy them too.

Join us on Thursdays for Happy Hour, where we offer free wine starting at 4:30PM until we close. There are no purchase obligations– we just want you to enjoy our antiques and vintage decor as much as we do.

This whole Coronavirus thing has been a learning experience, to say the least. It has presented all of us challenges we did not expect. That said, we’re coming out swinging and feel we’ve got some brand new ideas to bette improve our store better than ever before.

I’m confident everyone at this point can agree on one thing: we’re all eager to get back to our normal routines, like eating out and shopping IN a store. While we must stay inside a little longer, we’re offering something new for you to maybe take a little edge off.

Every item that comes up will be assigned a number. We’ll talk about each item and give you the price. If you’d like to purchase it, all you have to do is leave a comment with said assigned number. We’ll follow up with you the following day to set up free local delivery, or get your shipping information. At the same time, we’ll process your payment. It’s that simple.

It’s almost like an auction. Unlike an auction however, there’s no bidding. This is a first come, first serve basis.

While it may not be exactly shopping in store, we hope it’ll give you a tiny escape from what seems like the longest period of our lives. We’ll see you soon!
